Whose your favorite superhero?
I was thinking about heroes today, superheroes that is. One of my favorite questions to ask my guests here is “Who is your favorite superhero?” It’s a question that anyone can answer easily. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t love superheroes? Haven’t we all wished for superpowers once (okay maybe some of us were five, but that still counts.)
When I was five, I wanted to be Wonder Woman because she was strong and beautiful. She wore glasses and no one dared pick on Diana. Even better, she was a princess. Superman was great because he’s just so dang honest and perfect and he could fly–without the invisible plane. He was also too perfect, just a little…boring. (Stay tuned for villains turned heroes tomorrow.) Where’s the character building flaws? Moving on. Spidey’s cool. So are the X-Men. (Wolverine is my favorite out of that bunch.)
With the anime explosion (yes, I *heart* anime.) came more strong role models for girls. My Anna was little when Sailor Moon first started airing in the U.S. , so between her and Kayla I’ve seen every episode countless times. Cardcaptors, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon also made the list of must watch toons in our house.
Still, out of all the superheroes to choose from, Batman will always be my favorite. Why? He was just a guy. Yes, a rich guy, with Alfred’s genius skills and lots of toys, but…he was still just a guy with a tormented past. He stepped up, saved the day without a single super power. He wasn’t perfect, didn’t pretend to be. He was full of angst and grit, struggling to avenge without crossing a line he couldn’t come back from. Batman=awesome.
If you’re a bat fan, then you should check out this short Batman Beyond film made in honor of the 75th anniversary of the bat.
I’m curious to know. Whose your favorite superhero?
