Review – The Silver Chain by Primula Bond – Dark, Sensuous, Tension filled Passion
A Harper Collins Mischief title
Rating: Gotta Read! / 5 Stars
Serena Folkes, a young budding photographer, has left her childhood home behind to travel to London with hopes of kick-starting her career and leaving her painful past behind. While snapping pictures of trick-or-treaters on Halloween night, she bumps into Gustav Levi, the owner of a modern art gallery. The pair quickly hit it off and escape the cold night air for a drink. After being called away to a Halloween party by her cousin Polly, Serena accidentally leaves her camera in Gustav’s care.
Never one for a wasted opportunity, Gustav takes the liberty of scrolling through Serena’s camera and discovers her dark and sensuous art. When she arrives at his gallery to retrieve her camera, Gustav proposes an arrangement to skyrocket her career. What does he get out of the deal? Serena…in his bed and at his command.
The Silver Chainis the first book in the Unbreakable Trilogy by veteran author Primula Bond. Like Serena’s art, the relationship between Gustav and Serena is dark, lusty and filled with tension. Gustav is desperate to chase away his personal demons after a marriage from hell stole everything dear to him. Serena’s past ekes into every part of her being and sometimes gets in the way. Both crave something only the other can seem to give which leads to the emotional growth of the characters.
Serena is a tough cookie. I like that about her. She’s not afraid to lay everything on the line or walk away with her heart in hand. She’s also patient where her guy is concerned and at times knows what he needs more than he does. Gustav is enigmatic and mysterious. He needs to be in control, because he was abusively controlled by his ex-wife. He is also gentle and kind at times even if he doesn’t realize it.
Ms Bond weaves a tantalizing tale of sensual healing between two badly bruised hearts in a way only some can understand. Linked not bound. Gustav may hold The Silver Chain but it is Serena who is in control of his heart. I found it easy to fall under their spell.
The Silver Chain Blurb:
‘Being needed by someone is different from having power over them, and far more alluring, and I’m a fool for not recognising that. I’m a fool for not recognising you.‘
Twin souls colliding? Or was Gustav waiting for her?
Young photographer Serena Folkes believes she’s struck gold when the tycoon Gustav Levi offers to showcase her debut exhibition. But there are strings attached. Serena must move into Gustav’s London town house and agree to pleasure him in any way he chooses. Patron and protegee, they are bound by the silver chain that symbolises this contract until the last photograph is sold.
As her work sells and Gustav’s demands increase, Serena surprises them both with her feisty character and eager participation. It’s not such a tough ask. Gustav is exotic and intriguing. She is hungry and willing to learn. Gradually she learns what demons have driven him to strike bargains rather than to trust. And when Gustav discovers that Serena’s abusive past has almost destroyed her ability to love, he realises they are not so different after all.
Can they plan a future together, or will a single act of betrayal return to haunt them?
