Special Guest: Interview with Lana Fox (Confessions of a Kinky Divorcee)
Thank you for joining me in the shadows. Pay no attention to
that odd silhouette over there. Weird things live here. Where do you hail
from?

I hail from England,
originally. In fact, I moved to the US

Tell me about your latest book. What makes it stand out from
the crowd?
the crowd?
Well, my
latest book is “Confessions of a Kinky Divorcee” published by Harper Collins’
Mischief (http://amzn.to/182tu6S). It is the story of Debs and her erotic
romance with the stiletto heel.

romance with the stiletto heel.
Freshly
divorced, in her late thirties, Debs sets off to discover her true erotic
self. And being the manager of Pussyfoot
Shoes, she soon realizes that stilettos are part of her sexual identity. Newly liberated, she takes off on an
adventure of wild flings, threesomes, and heel-worship. But at the same time, she can’t help falling
for her young tenant, Janey, a college student who is studying the history of
the stiletto. Debs is excited that Janey
knows how shoes can be powerfully transformative. Yet she keeps herself at bay, peeping and
admiring, believing that Janey is entirely out of bounds…

Do you have anything new in the works and can you tell us a
bit about it?
bit about it?
Yes, I am
working on lots of projects on at once, actually! Nothing new there…

Firstly, I’m
running a new online course called “The Mermaid Voyage: A Two-Week Journey of
Erotic Self-Discovery” (http://godeeperpress.com/?projects=mermaid-voyage). The women who join us are given the title
of Mermaids, and they receive audio visualizations, treats and oracle card readings
on a daily basis, as well as enticing tips on how to make daily love to
ourselves. The Mermaid Voyage is course
of erotic self-love, aimed to help every woman embrace and romance her “erotic
goddess” nature, whilst transforming her self-image for better!

Also, I am
editing a new anthology for Go Deeper Press (www.godeeperpress.com).
Entitled, “Shameless Behavior: Brazen Stories of Overcoming Shame,” it
is going to be one of a kind—an exciting read, on so many levels, for those who
know that erotic connections can transform us.
Also, I’m teaching a writing class in Boston called “Forbidden Fairy
Tales” (http://bit.ly/ZP4a0F). I
love fairy tales, especially erotic rewrites, so I can’t wait—it’s going to be
heaps of fun.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out?
The most
important thing, in my view, is to love your characters. Love them utterly and completely, as if they
are part of your very self, and get to know them as if they were your greatest
friends, closest lovers, or most exciting enemies. The more we hang out with our characters and
truly get to know and love/connect with them—no matter who they are—the more
powerful and pageturning our stories will be.
So that’s my five cents for those who are starting out!

How did you deal with rejection letters? Any tips for
unpublished writers?
unpublished writers?
Well, I learned
that publishing is a very subjective world!
I am a Senior Editor and Co-Founder of Go Deeper Press (www.godeeperpress.com), so I read and reject stories and books
every single day. In fact, under my
other name, I also used to work for a very well-established literary
magazine. There, I would see firsthand how subjective our views about publishing
a piece can be, especially when it clearly well-written.

Another
example: When I am teaching writing
classes (I teach at Grub Street —www.grubstreet.org — in Boston), there is always a wealth of opinion on every piece that a
student submits for critique. Some will
love the story! Some will think it needs
loads of work! Some will say it needs a little
extension! Others will say it needs a
little compression! Of course, there are
often areas that we all agree on, but that sense of really loving a piece is
incredibly subjective. I say to my
students, “George, you are the editor of one press, and Lucy, you are the
editor of another. Will you think the
same about stories? Unlikely!”

What tools of the trade are must-haves for you?
My laptop, my
dictionary and thesaurus, post-it notes and pens (oh dear god, yes!), and my
partner, Angela, (if I can call her a “tool”!) who is my best and most
supportive editor ever.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to research a
story?
story?
Wow, that’s a
great question! Well, I often ask Angela
to help me spatially etc. when I’m plotting adventurous sex scenes. Not so long ago, for example, during a
writing day, I lay on the floor and got Angela to put the heel of a certain
stiletto into my mouth, and made sure that I wasn’t able to move my hands at
all. I asked her to move the heel in
different ways and allow me to suck, lick, etc. so that I could concentrate on
exactly how the process works and feels.
This was research, by the way, not actual sex! During actual sex, I tend
not to think about technicalities, of course, which is why I need research
moments!

What do you like to read?
I read all
sorts of books! I love erotica and erotic
romance, and also spiritual/psychological self-help and other nonfiction,
especially books that published by Hay House. On my Kindle, I’m currently
really enjoying Justine Elyot’s “Confessions of a Kinky Wife” (http://amzn.to/182xZOX)
and Suzanne Portnoy’s “The Butcher, The
Baker, The Candlestick Maker” (http://amzn.to/Ztxwzb).

Who is your favorite author and why?
In terms of
fiction, Sarah Waters is one of my favorite writers ever—I especially love
“Fingersmith” and “Tipping the Velvet.” And non-fiction? The Diaries of Anais Nin (e.g. “Fire: A
Journal of Love”) are among my most precious books. I re-read them and dip into them whenever I
long for her writing—and I often do! And
then, in terms of screenwriting, there’s Joss Whedon. Dear god, he is so important in helping our
society to explore and empower our erotic selves, embracing love rather than
shame. And boy, can he weave a yarn!

Now for the fun questions. Let’s strip away the veil
of invisibility. Do you have a day job alongside writing and will you tell us
about it?

Ah, well, as
well as being an Editor at Go Deeper Press, I work as both a writing coach and
confidence coach. (http://wholearts.blogspot.com/). It is such rewarding work! Seeing the authors that I work with
publishing their stories, building their names and platforms, winning contests,
having great success with stunning projects, is amazing. And as a confidence coach, I see people
seizing their hearts’ desires on a week-by-week basis! It is amazing how greatly we can hold
ourselves back through lack of self-esteem or self-limitation. I really enjoy seeing my clients feeling
excited about their passions!

If you weren’t a writer, what career might you have chosen?
Radio work or
voice recording work, I think. I
actually do some professional audio recording already, but if I weren’t a
writer or publisher or coach, I’d hope to make this into my full-blown career.

Who is your favorite superhero (or heroine)? Can be from a
comic book, movie, novel, cartoon, video game or anywhere else heroes reign.

Love this

from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, once he has regained his soul—and even before
that, actually. I also love Buffy,
Willow and Xander, and Echo in Dollhouse.

You finally have an evening free to spend any way you want.
Money is no object. Where do you go? What would you do?

I’d grab Angela
and off we’d go to stay in the Library Hotel in New York (http://www.libraryhotel.com/).
(It’s glorious, especially for book-lovers!) That night, we’d have an
amazing meal—I’d have to research restaurants for that, though—and then we’d go
and see Avenue Q (http://www.avenueq.com/).
See, I just love puppets!

So! When does the money land in our laps? 😉
You’ve been gifted (or cursed) with the ability to shift

I’m a

When Debs discovers her husband is having an affair with a woman she finds herself attracted to, it makes her question her very self …
A marriage and husband behind her, Deb’s journey of sensual discovery begins in earnest. Confessing her escapades to her fur-covered diary, “Kitten,” Deb dates and experiments with both women and men, and takes her love of shoes to a whole new level.
But when she starts obsessing over her new tenant, Janey Prince, a college student who is researching the history of the stiletto, Debs draws ever closer to totally crossing the line in her sexual preferences.
Despite the pitfalls, and risks, and an ex husband who wants to get back into her life, it seems other women combined with her lust for shoes make the perfect fit.
