Review and Spotlight: Simmer by Kaitlyn Davis

Ignite: Midnight Fire Series, Book One
Rating: 3.5 stars

With one last look, one final search of the lines of his face for some sign, Kira turned and ran away from the sound of the man she loved laughing in the face of her death.

When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they’re keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan’s lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

Simmer: Midnight Fire Series, Book Two
Rating: 4 stars

Slowly, like a whisper almost blown away in the wind, two words streaked across her mind: “Kiss me.”

Kira may have survived the eclipse, but her troubles are far from over. She’s headed to Sonnyville with one goal in mind: to learn more about her parents. But with Luke and Tristan competing for her heart and Diana gunning for her head, time is running out on the search for her mother. And the closer Kira gets to answers, the more terrified she becomes. The conduits fear her, the vampires fear her, and Kira is starting to wonder if maybe they’re right…

Series Review:  Seventeen year-old Kira Dawson’s family is relocating to Charleston, South Carolina. As she struggles to find her place in a new school as a senior, she is befriended by Luke, makes enemies with a group of kids known as the “misfits” who are gorgeous in appearance, but have strange ways.
A surfing disaster puts her in the arms of misfit Tristan who appears to be different than his co-horts. Much to Luke’s growing distress, Kira begins a relationship with Tristan only to discover he and his friends are vampires and she has mystical powers of her own. Powers that will destroy life as she knows it.

When I began reading Ignite, I classed it as Twilight fan fiction, simply because the whole initial scenario and premise are very similar to the hero/heroine first meet and plot of the well known vampire series. BUT, after the first few initial chapters I was quickly changing my mind. Kira is tough with enough powers to dust vampires without a sparkly boyfriend to save the day. In fact, throughout the second book it is she who saves him on several occasions. Luke is the perfect tortured best friend. Supportive, kind and totally in love with Kira, although she doesn’t love him in a romantic way. Tristan is a little overbearing, but no more than you would expect. He and Luke come to terms with their differences and become tentative friends.

Simmer  carries the story further and finds Kira and Luke in Sonnyville, a haven for conduits. Amidst vampire attacks on the village, meeting her biological grandparents and strange new powers that seem to connect Kira and Luke mentally, there are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing.  I’m looking forward to reading Blazethe next book in this series.
