31 Days of Halloween - Kathleen S. Allen

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
That’s easy. I wanted to be a writer, a ballet dancer, a doctor, an astronaut, an archeologist, or an actress.

Tell us about your latest book.  My latest book is LORE OF FEI, a YA faerie fantasy published by Muse It Up Publishing. It’s not your typical faerie book.

Do you have anything new in the works and can you tell us a bit about it?

I am in the process of reworking a YA book into a MG book based on feedback I’ve gotten on it. I’ve also written a few short stories I put up on Kindle, a YA historical novel about the early life of the mother of King Arthur called EIGYR, a retelling of a Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice (not YA) called ORPHEUS ASCENDING, and a YA book that was inspired by the Greek myth of Artemis, the moon goddess called MOON PRINCESS. Plus I have a YA Dystopian I am reworking called THE VIDDEN. My second Lore of Fei book called WAR OF FEI has been accepted by Muse It Up and will be coming out in Feb. 2013. I also have a second murder mystery (again, not YA) coming out from Gypsy Shadow next year. This is the second book in the Mel Thompson, P.I. series. The first one is called IF IT’S MONDAY, IT MUST BE MURDER and this one is called IF IT’S TUESDAY, IT MUST BE TROUBLE!

Is there anything you find particularly challenging about writing?
Finding time to write when you have a full time day job is challenging. I get up a bit early and write before work and then when I come home, after I eat dinner and attend to my cats, I write in the evening until about 10p. On the weekends I try and write more if I can. The trick for me is to not turn the TV on. I make it a rule that I can’t watch any TV until I have either written 2,000 words or edited two or more chapters (depending on the book). No TV for me=more writing time.

How did you deal with rejection letters? Lots of tears and hair pulling. Then I look at it and if it’s helpful, I incorporate the changes into the book/query.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever done in the name of research? When I was writing my YA Dystopian/Zombie book I did research on types of guns, how to take apart them and clean them. I guess it’s not weird but odd for me.

Don't forget to give us links to your website etc.
